PATRICIA'S BIRTHDAY!

"ERNEST HEMINGWAY AND GERTRUDE STEIN: PARIS EXPATS OF THE LOST GENERATION: THE RELATIONSHIP."

Sun
day 6 October 2013
19h00 - 22h30ish

(Happy Hour. Dinner and Desser
t. David's Presentation. More Great Socializing)

Our Guest of Honor

David Burke
Author of
"Writer's In Paris"

Ernest Hemingway, a giant of 20th century American literature (a Nobel Prize winner), learned much of his skill here in Paris mingling with the Personalities of the day such as Gertrude Stein, James Joyce and Ezra Pound. Many of his books and short stories are rich in Paris references, most notably “The Sun Also Rises” and “A Moveable Feast”. He was the quintessential American expatriate of the 1920s.

Gertrude Stein came to her brother Leo's Paris atelier in 1903 where she began her lifelong passion for art and her writing career. Her writing style was deeply influenced by what the painters she admired were doing, particularly by Picasso. The experience of Picasso painting the portrait of her in 1906, signaled both the beginning of Cubism in Modern Art and and modern literature in her writing. Gertrude Stein had relationships with other writers during the 1920s: James Joyce, Ezra Pound, Sherwood Anderson and most notably, Ernest Hemingway.

About David Burke

David Burke is a writer, documentary filmmaker, and former television journalist, most notably at CBS News, on two series with Walter Cronkite, The 21st Century and Walter Cronkite Reports, and as a writer/producer on 60 Minutes, working with Dan Rather and Ed Bradley.

Note About David’s Walks: (Mon 7 October)

"I happen be doing my popular "Lost Generation" and Beyond walk on Monday morning, the 7th October. It's loaded with Hem and Stein. (This date came about because people who are doing my Place de la Contrescarpe walk on Sunday the 6th asked me to add the Montparnasse walk on Monday: it follows the story of Hem in the Contrescarpe area perfectly)."
