From "Writers In Paris" - Excerpts www.writersinparis.com

Colette A Paris: In Claudine à Paris, published in 1901, the seventeen-year-old heroine, whose father has dragged her away from their village in Burgundy starts to take a look at the city: "I can't conceive why people live in Paris for their pleasure, without being forced to do so; no, but I'm beginning to understand that you can take an interest in what happens in these big six-story boxes."

Oscar Wilde: Wild's Last Days. "I am dyng beyond my means," Oscar Wilde famously quipped as he lay on his deathbed. And it was perfectly true. Dirt cheap though the Hôtel d'Alsace was, if it hadn't been for the soft heart of the owner, Wilde would have been evicted for nonpayment.. About the the deadful wallpaper in the hotel room he said, "One of us has to go." He went at fourty-six, on November 30, 1900.

George Sand:: George Sand At Her Mansarde Bleue.. The four years George Sand lived in her "mansarde bleue," the top-floor apartment above the treetops were among the wildest years in a life rarely lacking for excitement. During the first few months of 1833, she signed a cntract for her new novel Lélia, became romantically involved with actress Marie Dorval, ended her affair with Jules Sandeau, and had a diasstous fling with Prosper Mèrimée. On June 19 she met Alfred de Musset, and six weeks later began her celebrated affair with the boy wonder of romantic poetry. At twenty-one, he was seven years Sand's junior, as was the discarded Sandeau.
