"FINDING THE LOVE THAT YOU WANT: THE DYNAMICS OF HOW TO LOVE AND BE LOVED MORE"

Our Guest Of Honor

BARRY D'SOUZA

Psychotherapist

From Barry D'Souza: "There is an old adage that goes 'you can only love others, when you love yourself first'. While I'm sure many of us have heard this we might not be aware exactly how and why this is the case. Many of us in the field of psychotherapy understand that our ability to love and form healthy and meaningful relationships stems from the ongoing story of our 'attachment'. This attachment story, the one that researchers John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth first developed, shapes two fundamentals in our lives. Firstly, how we look and see ourselves - whether we are lovable, worthy and valued. This is shaped by the attachment figures in our early childhood, often our moms or dads. Secondly, how we go out into the world and form relationships. What type of romantic relationship we have is to a great degree based on attachment. Attachment is deep-seated to humans, some would argue it to be hard-wired on biological levels. Much of our attachment story and history is unconscious to us, yet it shapes our evolution as "loving" human beings and as human beings to be "loved". Three attachment equations - avoidant, ambivalent and secure - have been much discussed and debated. There may be more as each of us is unique. The world that we live in demands we tap our resources of love and compassion.. However, much of our capacities in these two important areas are held back, kept hidden or blocked by the type of attachment we have known. Making contact with our attachment, being aware of it and forming new attachment equations is key in the will to having loving, meaningful relationships. I'd like to offer a little of the mechanics of attachment and how not-so-dynamically it shapes who we are in relationships and offer a little on how it is we can "love" and "be loved" more.

About Barry: A Torontonian of mixed background, Barry lives between two worlds (France and Canada) and hopes to soon make India a third home of sorts. Barry teaches history and geography mainly, but, for the last 5 years has been building a part-time practice as Counselling Psychotherapist; working with individuals and couples. He hopes in 2011 to move into the world of cybercounselling. The two fields intersect in the ongoing interest in the evolving story of consciousness - that of others and his own. "I'd like to develop an ever-expanding capacity for love and compassion and I'd like to help others help themselves to do the same."

May change your way of looking at your life!
