"A MODERN DAY CHÂTELAINE. HER OWN CHÂTEAU IN BURGUNDY "

Sunday 3 February

18h45 - 22h00

Happy Hour. Dinner and Dessert and Lara's Presentation. More Great Socializing.

Our Guest of Honor

LARA LUNOW
Châtelaine

"THE LIFE OF A MODERN DAY CHÂTELAINE: HER OWN CHÂTEAU IN BURGUNDY "

From Lara: "Our Motto: Take A Sip Of Burgundy At Château De Percey"

The French word châtelaine means ‘key-holder of a chateau’. Lara Lunow is a 21st century châtelaine who welcomes guests in her manor house. She has realized a dream and at the same time turned her dream into a business, in the French countryside, in Burgundy.

Lara, the daughter of a Dutch antique dealer, came to France to learn French when she was 16 – in a village with a small château. Being there triggered her fantasies and she dreamed of living the life of a princess in a castle. Twenty years later, she learned that her then boyfriend (future husband Pauwl) had the same dream. Together they found a château, built in 1783, in a hamlet in northern Burgundy and turned it into an environment that is welcoming with their own special brand of hospitality.

After beginning restoration, while living temporarily in the Middle East, Lara felt that there was something lacking in the European notion of hospitality and service. She felt that by opening her château to the public, she could make up for that lack and at the same time, the château would reflect her style. She envisioned a warm, stylish, welcoming and comfortable place with contemporary art and modern furniture with antique accents. This, along with the gardens, would be a perfect place for others to come to relax and enjoy the company of family and friends.

Lara, a great cook, who has been a communications consultant and worked in PR and Event Organizing, will share some of her experiences renovating Château de Percey. Work started while she was in France, and continued long distance when she and Pauwl were in Oman and the UK. She is hostess, chef and tourist guide. Laura and Pauwl ( he works in IT) bought the château in 2002 and opened it to the public in 2006. They have converted it into a family living space for themselves and their two children with two holiday gites, which they rent out (one is under construction this winter). There are reception rooms, they serve afternoon tea, have a table d’hôte and host special events. They once housed an art gallery in the château. To learn more about Château de Percey, please visit: www.chateaupercey.com

I'm sure that we'll all have fun and we'll eat some great Burgundy cheese! - Patricia

Tenor John Easterlin is well on his way. John is in Paris for his European Opera Debut with the Paris Opera (Bastille). His debut, was on Monday January 21st, a day after his Birthday, in the role of the Hunchback Brother in Richard Strauss' "La Femme sans ombre" ("Die Frau ohne Schatten"). Visit : www.operadeparis.fr and click on operas.

John will be our special guest this Sunday and share some experiences and insights into the building of his operatic career. He’ll share with us a little of what it takes and how chance works to endeavour on this awesome career path. And of course, there are humorous anecdotes.

In the US, John performs regularly with the leading houses (frequently with the Metropolitan Opera in NYC as well as with Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston, Philadelphia, Dallas etc. The L.A. Opera production of "Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny" (Weill) aired in the US on "PBS Great Performances" recently and is now out on dvd and will air across Europe in February. John stars opposite two well known Broadway stars (Patti LuPone and Audra McDonald) as well as renowned opera artists and is well known for his musical theatre activities. He has appeared in several shows on Broadway, including the Tony Award winning revival of Chicago and the new musical, Band in Berlin.

A performer from a young age, John was the youngest male soloist ever to tour with the legendary group, Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians, personally selected by Mr. Waring himself. His European theatrical debut came in the Paris premiere of Hello Dolly! at the Chatelet Opera in a record-breaking four month sold-out engagement.

John, also a puppeteer, began his own puppet production company at seven and still maintains it. He also previously had a corporate advertising career and received both the ADDY Award and the American Advertising Federation’s Young Advertiser of the Year Award. John Easterlin is appearing on January 24, 28, 31 and February 3, 7 and 10 in "La Femme sans ombre" ("Die Frau ohne Schatten").

"DO WOMEN STILL NEED MEN?"

Sunday 6 January

Our Guest of Honor

ROSINE BRAMLY

Author of books about love. Astrologer. Clairvoyant.

"Do Women Still Need Men ? "

("Les Femmes ont elles encore besoin des Hommes ?" - Editons Jean-Claude Gawzewitch )

FROM ROSINE

Relationships between men and women are different from the previous generations. We are living in a very confusing moment in history in our urban surroundings. Of course it is more obvious to see the difference in cities than in the country where it is more traditional, but we have to re-invent our relationships, find other rules of the game of love:

Women have to give up on the ideal of Prince Charmingand open their eyes to new men, stop dreaming and making choices that are real.

Men have to adjust to a new type of relationship with women, giving them the right to be themselves: strong and vulnerable, and not only Barbie dolls. Now men are entitled to express their feelings and are also allowed to be vulnerable without shame.

The reasons of all these changes in our relationships are economic also. Women had to learn to be able to survive on their own, not expecting to be taken care of by men. Traditional roles are dying, we try to reach some equality, and we cannot keep the same attitude.

According to our generation we have to think about what kind of love life we want for our future, together or not together, all the time or for some years, the choice is flexible, and this freedom can be very scary.

We have to think about new solutions to stay partners in life.

Do women still need men? and do men need women? the answer has to be yes for the best on both parts."

ABOUT ROSINE:

"
Who am I?

astrologer and clairvoyant for many years I do readings and I write horoscopes and numerology for magazines as Figaro Madame, Marie-France, Glamour and on

Marilyn, originally from Detroit, was born into a multiracial family of 7 singing sisters of an American Father and a Ghanaian-Nigerian Mother. Her first large audience concert was at the age of 7 leading a children’s choir. In July 2005, Marilyn David was lead singer before 100,000 people at the Chateau de Versailles for Cerrone (Live 8).

What a New Years Eve treat.!

About Nlli

Nili Blumberg defines herself as a life artist, a term she adopted from the Buddhist Vipasana meditation. The term refers to the importance of honouring the core essence in any physical manifestation with detachment to any fixed form, choosing to manifest its most appropriate expression from moment to moment. Her work is a demonstration of "the art of living", constantly on the fine line between art and "real life". She prefers to exhibit her live-installations in shop windows and street corners, integrating them into the everyday reality of a city.

Nili, is newly based in Paris after being on tour with this project for the past two and a half years.

RENDEZ VOUS CHEZ PATRICIA

This Sunday 9
December At 18h45

Our Guest of Honor:

W. Scott Haine

Historian. Author

Scott will speak of his new book "The Culture and Customs of France". He will also speak of his work on Paris Cafes ("The World of the Paris Café: Sociability among the French Working Class, 1789 - 1914.) and research that he is doing for a future book on Cafés.

Here's what's been written about "The Culture and Customs of France":The French are of perennial interest, for, among other things, their style, their cuisine and wine, and their cultural output. Culture and Customs of France is a thoroughly jam-packed narrative through the glories that France continues to offer the world... a boon for preparing country reports, a must-read for travelers, and perfect for culture studies. Chapters on the land, people, and history, religion, social customs, gender, family, and marriage, cinema and media, literature, food and fashion, architecture and art, and performing arts are current and pleasurable to read.

About Scott Haine. While a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin (where he received an M.A. and a Ph.D.), Scott was introduced to Social History. He became especially intrigued by the topic of cafés. It's an interest has remained a passion.

From Scott: "I had already been attuned to the importance of the café from taking Lynn Hunt's "Old Regime and Revolution" course at the University of California, Berkeley. I then went to the library and read some dazzling descriptions of French café life in the age of Jean Jaures and email Zola and was caught up in a passion to recover the words, gestures and deeds of café life "

You'll learn a lot about a Paris institution that you take for granted: the cafe. Highly entertaining!

This semester, Scott is a lecturer in European history at the College of San Mateo Study Abroad Program in London.

GREAT FOOD! International Cuisine. (Southern US, French or other European. Thai, lovingly prepared as always by Patricia). Free flowing wine.

Patricia writes on being an Expat:

"... As the years went by, I also realized that the feeling of being foreign and other, transcends even race. You are not part of their (French) culture. It doesn't matter who you are or of what origin you are. You're either French (in your head and behavior), or not. When I began to see that, I began to identify myself as an expat. The sum of being an American who lives in Paris, an African-American trying to find roots here, minus not being French - but seeing life internationally - on a large scale and permanently, equals my personal experience of being an expat."
