"India: Surviving The Monsoon." (A Photo Exposé)

From Linda Quinet: "Two excellent reasons not to go to India in July are: heat and monsoon.

But when fate says, "Either go in July or don't go," go. Linda did. A volunteer opportunity was the reason; her Paris apartment was rented the entire month, providing plane fare.

A little research and voilà—the solution: Hill stations in the north.

The British recognized their value as a respite from life-threatening heat and humidity when they developed Shimla into a summer home for the government in the late 1800s. Think "Jewel in the Crown" about the British Raj starting to think that "their" time in India was coming to an end. For those like Linda just beginning as an India-phile, Shimla and other hill stations are relatively easy to get to, tourist friendly, and temperaturely correct in July. Once there, local sights are accessible on foot, albeit uphill all the way. Beggars are infrequent and/or far less tenacious than in southern cities. Fewer holy cows wander about, but watch out for the monkeys.

While in northern India, one might as well take in the Taj Mahal, the Ganges and ghats. The nonprofit project was 200 kms west of Kolkata/Calcutta. " Contact Linda on
