VIVE LA PHOTO. San Francisco Photographer Jan Hanson. Projects Images. Remarks. Paris Soirees Dinner Sunday 4 June At 18h30

This Sunday 4 June At 18h30.

Our Guest Of Honor:

Jan Hanson
Photographer

Vive La Photo

San Francisco Photographer Jan Hanson will project and discuss her poetic images of Paris by night and mouth watering close-ups of food by day, as well as a few surprise images for good measure

During the past 25 years, Jan Hanson has been photographing her favorite things in California and France. Soon after attending a summer photography workshop in Paris in 2001, Jan launched her website and began selling photos professionally.

Jan uses Nikon film equipment and prefers to shoot the “old fashioned” way by using many manual features of the camera and not forgetting that the most important pieces of equipment are the eye and the heart. Her work emphasizes vibrant color and light, and she takes great pleasure in helping others to see what they might have walked by without noticing. Jan believes that photos should be “given” as well as “taken,” and she know she has struck a chord when the recipient’s face breaks into a wide smile or when a tear comes to their eye. Samples of her work can be seen at http://http://www.janhansonphoto.com/.

Jan also offers a line of handmade greeting cards featuring her work.

MANDA DJINN

In celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Josephine (June 3, 1906), excerpts from the Manda Djinn two-character play, LA BAH-KEER. Josephine Baker, one of the first African-American musical performers to become a star in Paris and a legend of the Paris Jazz Age, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and performed in New York before arriving in Paris in 1925 . She thereafter carved a niche for herself in Europe as an international cabaret star in the1920s and 1930s.

The play touches on the three main aspects of the life of Josephine: life in Europe: her early rise to stardom, her participation in World War II as part of the French Resistance; and finally her adoption of the Rainbow Tribe (a group of orphaned children of all origins) and their installation at the Milandes Chateau in Dordogne. Manda Djinn, jazz/gospel singer and playwright, performs La Bakeer, the older, wiser, Josephine. Natalie Frederic, actress, singer, performs the younger, naive, Josephine. Manda will speak further about Josephine and her arrival in Paris at the beginning of the jazz era.

Elizabeth Dewberry's Princess Diana Inspired Novel: HIS LOVELY WIFE: Paris Soirees Dinner Sunday 7 May At 18h30

RENDEZ-VOUS AVEC PATRICIA

This Sunday 7 May At 18h30.

Our Guest Of Honor:

ELIZABETH DEWBERRY
Novelist and Playwright

From the novel:

…Ellen begins to hear Diana’s voice in her head, expressing unspeakable thoughts:

"People were always taking pictures of me, but every photo was taken because I was the Princess of Wales, not because I was Diana. Everywhere I went, I went because I was married to Prince Charles, people reacted to me because of that. But I knew I’d taken on a role, and I didn‘t want to let anyone down, so every morning I’d go through the papers and study the pictures, trying to figure out who the Princess of Wales was. When the media praised her for being something I wasn’t, I tried to become that, and when the media praised her for being something I was nit, I tried to become that, and when they criticized her for not being what I thought I was: self-doubt all over the place…I was the most photographed woman in the world but ninety-nine percent of these images are lies."

Amy Tan wrote:

"...With the beauty of language and nuance of gestures, she captures the unspoken yet profoundest truths between husband and wife. I predict HIS LOVELY WIFE will find a huge audience and grab those lucky readers by the heart."

Elizabeth Dewberry is the author of three previous novels, including SACRAMENT OF LIES. Her plays have been produced in a variety of venues. She lives in Tallahasee, Florida with her husband, Robert Olen Butler.
